Story Overview:
“Bhool Bhulaiyaa” is set in a small town in India and centers around an ancient, supposedly haunted palace called
Vastu Shastra. The story mixes psychological mystery with elements of horror and comedy.
Full Story:
1. Introduction to the Palace and Family:
Siddharth (Shiney Ahuja) and his wife Avni (Vidya Balan), an NRI couple, return to India and decide to stay in their ancestral palace in a village. The palace has been locked for years because it is believed to be haunted by the spirit of a dancer named
Manjulika.
Despite warnings from the locals and family members, Siddharth insists on staying in the palace. Strange occurrences start happening shortly after they move in.
2. Rising Suspicion and Fear:
Mysterious voices, moving objects, and strange incidents create fear and suspicion. Everyone begins to believe the palace is indeed haunted. A priest and local astrologer warn Siddharth that a powerful spirit has awakened. Avni appears calm and rational, supporting her husband in dismissing the fears.
But soon, Avni’s behavior starts changing—she begins speaking in a different voice, dressing up in Bengali classical attire, and even attempts to harm people in the palace. Suspicion arises that
Manjulika’s spirit has possessed someone.
3. Introduction of Dr. Aditya:
Siddharth calls his childhood friend,
Dr. Aditya Shrivastav (Akshay Kumar), a humorous and intelligent psychiatrist, to investigate the strange occurrences. Aditya’s arrival brings some comic relief, but he soon realizes that something is seriously wrong.
As he digs deeper, Aditya uncovers the hidden truth behind the supposed haunting.
4. The Truth Revealed:
Aditya eventually discovers that
Avni herself is suffering from dissociative identity disorder (split personality). She unconsciously takes on the persona of
Manjulika, a classical dancer from Bengal who was in love with a royal singer named Shashidhar centuries ago.
Manjulika was betrayed and killed when the king forced Shashidhar to marry another woman. In her madness, she killed Shashidhar and swore revenge. Avni, fascinated by Manjulika’s story, began identifying with her to the point that she became her.
The “haunting” is actually a manifestation of Avni’s psychological disorder—not a ghost.
5. The Climax and Resolution:
Aditya uses his psychological expertise to treat Avni. In a tense climax, he confronts her when she is fully in her Manjulika persona. He sets up a staged environment to help her confront her trauma and bring her back to reality.
Eventually, Avni snaps out of it and returns to normal. The palace is purified, and the myth of the haunting is put to rest. The family finally gets peace.
Conclusion:
“
Bhool Bhulaiyaa” is not a ghost story in the traditional sense—it’s a psychological thriller that explores how mental illness can be misunderstood as supernatural possession. The blend of suspense, humor, and a powerful performance by Vidya Balan made the film a huge success.
